The Bad Is Outweighing the Good Right Now
This Never Happened When I Went There

School Spirit
I'm looking forward to a short week this week, since I'm blowing this popsicle stand on Friday to head down for Homecoming. I wisely chose to take next Monday off for recovery time, so watch out Athens, here I come.

Friday Timewaster: Spot Bowl 2009
Coincidence? I Think Not.
I mean, come on:
- A hotly contested election that looks like it's going to come down to the wire?
- Bruce Springsteen is going to play the Super Bowl?
- The Buffalo Bills are undefeated?
It's the only possible explanation, right?

OU vs. OSU: OMFG
I knew it was a foregone conclusion, but ... I can't believe OU was in it until late in the third, and even then almost pulled it off. When we had a lead in the first half, I told my friend Matt and my sister that Tressel was just toying with us — letting us get a few minutes of joy before he has the guys kick it up a notch and totally crush us in the second half.
So, it was a pretty good trip up until about 2:20 Saturday afternoon, which is pretty much when the aforementioned crushing began in earnest. My sister and I came down on Friday, geeked around at the comics archives and the campus bookstore, and took a hard-hat tour of the renovated main library. Then we went to the OU alumni pre-pregame party at the Lodge Bar.
That place was packed: We got there about two hours into it, and they had already run out of the plastic mugs with the special OU logo (the comic book image in Friday's post) and were handing out mugs with the bar logo. I'm cheesed because I wanted an OU one, but it's my own fault for getting lost downtown and wasting about a half hour.
Apparently there were a thousand people there, and between the cover charge and the rally towels, the Central Ohio alumni chapter raised about seven grand for its scholarship fund. I flipped through some of the event photos on the Columbus Young Bobcats page, but I don't think I'm in any of them, thank goodness. I did see a ton of people I know, including the president of the D.C. chapter and the former director of the alumni association (who now works for UCLA), and I rocked out a bit to the alumni band and Dirty Martini. Meanwhile, my sister sat in the corner and worked on her knitting. (No joke.)
One of her friends from OSU came by, and we went to get something to eat. Somehow we ended up at the Book Loft, because it was open until midnight. Eventually, however, my sister and I called it a night and headed back to our club-level king suite at the Sheraton. This place was pretty P.I.M.P.: two 32-inch plasma tvs — one in the living room and one in the bedroom; a king-size bed plus a sleeper sofa in the living room; a mini-fridge and microwave; wi-fi. It was in a limited-access area, which meant that you had to use your key card in the elevator to even get it to stop at our floor. Nice!
Staying there was a last-minute thing, which made it even more hilarious. I would have been content with a sleeping bag on Matt's floor, but since he couldn't put us up, he poked around on Hotwire Thursday afternoon and got us a room at the Sheraton for the same price or less than the advertised rate at the Motel 6 and Red Roof Inn on the same block. When he found out how awesome it was, he threatened to send us back to his house, and he'd stay in the suite.
First thing Saturday morning, we headed to campus in search of a parking space and the OU alumni pre-game party. It was a little strange to be eating hot dogs for breakfast, but I managed. I held off on the beer until 10, though. After I finished my beverage, my sister and I hiked up to the Oval for her alumni tailgate. We helped them kill the keg up there, while I heckled people who were hedging their bets: wearing OSU and OU gear. (Pick a team!) Around noon I got a text from Matt, explaining that a friend of his (and his brother) just got busted for open container. Doh! He managed to elude the fuzz, however, and came up to meet us on our way toward the stadium.
We were going to go to Riverwatch, since we knew some other OU alums would be watching the game from there. However, we realized that we could see the giant scoreboard inside the stadium from the street we were on, so we sat with about ten other people on a grassy knoll between the McCracken power plant and RPAC and watched the rest of the first half. I yelled and clapped loudly when OU made a good play, which confused the Buckeye fan in front of me. Her friend had to explain to her that I was rooting for OU, not OSU — a fact which I thought should have been evident from the bright green "Bobcats" shirt and green-and-white-beads I was wearing, but whatevs.
Speaking of shirts: Matt and I sounded like seventh-graders on Thursday when we argued over who got to wear what when this weekend. We both have green OU polos and something we call a Cooper Black t-shirt, since the "Bobcats" on the front uses that font. (We were cracking up over the font in May when we found the shirts in the bargain bin at Universi-Tees, since we're such font nerds. Obvs.) He wanted to wear a polo Friday and a Cooper Black shirt Saturday, but I said he couldn't, since that's what I was going to do.
He decided to sport a green "OS-Who?" shirt on game day, but came to regret that sartorial choice when he got heckled on the way to the alumni party Saturday morning. ("Nice shirt, asshole!") As a result, he bought a gray OU shirt at the party to put on before he ventured out onto campus by himself. Wimp! (Matt: Aren't you sorry you asked me to post a recap?!)
We watched the second half at Riverwatch, and when the outcome became a bit more obvious, we gave up and headed out. My sister and her friend took off to do some shopping and have dinner, and I dropped Matt off at home and went in search of some lotion to put on my sunburn. (I brought sunscreen, but neglected to actually put any on. Doh!)
My sister and I had a relaxing evening in our suite, watching Iron Man and Wanted on TV. (Did I mention they were 32-inch plasmas?) Early-ish on Sunday, we met up with some of my OU friends and their three-year-old son for breakfast at Bob Evans. Everything was going swimmingly until the waitress spilled a full glass of ice water down the poor kid's back. Yikes! My friends had a change of clothes for him on hand, though, and he calmed down as soon as he had on a dry shirt.
After all that excitement, checking out their new house was almost anticlimactic. It's lovely, though, with a big play area upstairs. We spent a few hours playing with his train set and Lincoln Logs before attempting some Candyland and Chutes and Ladders. He's still a little too young to be able to play the board games the standard way, but making up his own version was just as good.
Before we left town we had to stop by Mozart's to pick up some pastries for my mom. (She likes the marzipan peaches.) We also had lunch at the Blue Danube, where I ingested most of what I think was called a Bleu Dog: a half-pound beef frank topped with corned beef, sauerkraut, and melted cheese. Oy. It was pretty much a reuben crossed with a hot dog. Not quite a Parmageddon or Hamdog, but pretty close. If I hadn't also eaten half of the Blue Danube combo platter (fried mushrooms, zucchini, cauliflower; mozzarella sticks; onion rings), I probably could have finished it. Maybe next time: I hear OU plays OSU again in 2010.

This Week in Netflix: Volume XVIII
Megan** blogged about seeing some of the Oscar contenders lately. I don't like many of the nominated movies, so I'm not going to waste my time or money on stuff like Atonement*** or There Will Be Blood. No, I'd much rather waste these items on stuff like Cloverfield! (Which I thought was okay, actually, but Christine seemed to be intensely disappointed by it, especially the more she thought about it afterward.)
I did see Juno, though, and liked it, I guess. I remember complaining to Missy that I thought the dialogue was too-too — nobody really talks like that. Missy helpfully pointed out that movies never sound like real life. Missy felt the music was kind of annoying; I can take it or leave it. I'm not sure I'm going to drink the Kool-Aid and buy the soundtrack, although I might like to hear that Kinks song one more time. Oh, and I also felt that a lot of the "funny" lines were ruined for me by the ads. That snippet of Rainn Wilson in the promos? That's pretty much his entire screen time. I think I'll go back to my Arrested Development DVDs for my Michael Cera/Jason Bateman fix.
As for the actual Netflix rentals . . .
- I finished watching season 1 of Once and Again over the weekend. I knew that Adam Brody was on the show playing a friend of Shane West's character, but I didn't know that Rilo Kiley performed in that same episode! So, that was kind of cool. I was going to wait until I watched the second season, but maybe I'll move it up in the queue.
- I watched Transformers on fast-forward. Meh. Maybe if I'd seen it on the big screen I'd have been more impressed?
- I hated Mystery, Alaska, and watched that on fast-forward, too. I think the only Russell Crowe movie I like is L.A. Confidential, and that's mostly because of the genre.
- Best Men was totally goofy, but at least there was plenty of eye candy — which I think is what I was expecting from the hockey movie? I don't know.
- Fletch Lives is Fletch-lite. I don't think this is based on one of the novels, which I prefer in general.
- Are We Done Yet? is a cute remake of Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House — a movie my mom and I love.
In other somewhat Super Bowl–related news:
- This Oreos commercial totally squicks me out. Maybe I hang out with Cathy too much, but when I first saw the following shot, all I could think was, "Dirty!" ****
- Check out Casting Super Bowl: The Movie on SI.com.
- I thought about moving up all the NFL Films items in my Netflix queue, but maybe I'll just order the soundtrack music on CD instead.
* Along somewhat similar lines: Why does a bank's time/temperature sign bother giving the Celsius temperature? Nobody around here (Okay, except for Dick Goddard) knows (or cares) what that means. I think I'm just bitter because the bank across the street from the office has a sign that has been unable to display the time or (Fahrenheit) temperature in some form or another for the last few months yet still manages to show the Celsius temperature. Why?!
** The one in Ohio, not the one in Massachusetts.
*** Nevermind my crush on James McEvoy, whose adorableness quotient expanded exponentially when he appeared on Ryan Seacrest's show and on Craig Ferguson's show.
**** On second thought, seeing the freeze-frame doesn't convey the full "Dirty!"-ness of it. I think you really have to see the tongues in (ahem) action; or, as Eli describes it in the special bonus interview footage, "Seeing who can get it off the fastest."
#4, I Think I Love You

On any list of reasons why the Browns beat the Bills one final name needs mentioning: Phil Dawson. Without Dawson the Browns don’t win. It was great to see the only remaining member of the 1999 Browns team have yet another day in the sun (or overcast sky). Though it came on a smaller stage, Dawson’s 49-yard field goal in the second quarter was every bit as impressive as Adam Vinatieri’s field goal against the Raiders a few years ago. Amazing. And the reaction of both the crowd and the team — Anderson rushing the field with an oven mitt on his hand was priceless — served as a powerful emotional punch to the extraordinary physical display Dawson put on with his field goal kicking. In a game where small things made big differences it was fitting that Dawson’s leg prove to be the ultimate difference in the game.

Also awesome, in no particular order: Pittsburgh lost, Baltimore lost (to the Dolphins, no less!), and my grandma called to congratulate me on my team's win. (She roots for the Bengals, and they already lost on Thursday.)
Oh, it was a nice day yesterday after all.
Triple Feature

Cathy and Christine joined us for dinner at the Lemongrass Cafe and the cult classic. I could have sworn that I'd seen The Big Lebowski before, but I only recognized bits and pieces. So, for me it was almost like watching a new movie. Maybe later I'll explore some dude-related links and things I found on this blog.
The rest of the weekend, I OD'd on football. I was so busy watching my Season 1 DVD of Friday Night Lights that I didn't get around to watching the new episode of FNL that I taped on Friday night. Oh, and I was at the brewpub on Sunday afternoon for part of the Browns-Cardinals debacle. I'll leave you with the commentary from Deadspin:
One of the sickest trick plays I've ever seen came in the Browns-Cardinals game on a 2-point conversion, where kick returner Josh Cribbs lined up at tailback, Derek Anderson faked the "walk over to the deaf-ass wideout to explain the play," and the snap went to Cribbs, who faked the draw and tapped into his Kent State quarterbacking skills, lobbing the ball to Kellen Winslow. There were about three spices of fake in there. Simply stunning, and it came off a questionable long touchdown by Braylon Edwards in which he appeared to have been down by contact.
Fat lot of good it did, though, because Arizona was able to stave off the equine nads of Derek Anderson's last-second, 4th-down heave into the end zone, which was caught by Kellen Winslow but was pushed out of bounds and ruled out. (I watched this game out of free will over the Bears-Giants, if you hadn't noticed.) Cardinals 27, Browns 21
Why I Love Fall
This photo cracked me up, and I had to find some reason to share it.
- The Browns win on Sunday.
(Suck it, Baltimore!) - The Indians win on Sunday.
(Bring it on, Yankees!) - The Cavs start training camp today.
(Hope LeBron's not too worn out from impersonating a basketball player in almost every SNL sketch.)
- Pub Quiz, Episode 4
(I didn't go last week, but was told that Mike D's mom might have been there. Oh, and also that one of my Pub Quiz recaps made someone's day. So there, Cathy!) - The Russian Festival
(My parents and I go to this almost every year. This year I have to go on Wednesday since I'll be busy on Tuesday.) - Indians vs. Yankees, Game 1
(Go Tribe!)
Typical Cleveland

And the agony of defeat . . .
After I watched the baseball game and enjoyed all the locker-room celebrations, I switched over to the Browns game and watched that with my dad. I was thisclose to turning the game off when there were three or four minutes left and it seemed like there was no way they could get into field goal range. I probably should have, because, as my dad said, it just tears your heart out to have them get down there, MAKE THE KICK, and then have it blocked after the time out. Urk.
I blame this one on the Denver Broncos, quite frankly. Stupid Broncos, screwing us again. If they hadn't pulled the same stunt (icing the kicker) on Oakland last week, maybe it wouldn't have been in the forefront of Kiffin's mind. Apparently I'm not the only one who thinks so.
Insult to Injury
The hell? I don't care if the entire Browns team is on the injured list (a definite possibility, given the way things have been going), I am never going to a Steelers game. (I was originally going to write "never root for the Steelers," but then I remembered that I grudgingly rooted for them in the Super Bowl the other year, even though they're Pittsburgh and Big Ben went to Miami, thus earning them two black eyes in my book.)
Anyhow, the Browns are probably going to lose to the Broncos (again!) on Saturday, but I'll try to stay awake to watch it. I fell asleep the other week when they managed to beat Kansas City. My grandma teased me that it's probably the only win Cleveland will get all season, and I missed it. She's probably right.
O-H! Oh No!
It started out so well, too, with the kickoff return. Sixteen seconds, TD. Awesome. Too bad he got dinged up in the celebration and had to sit out the rest of the game.
When OSU scored its second touchdown, I told my friend, That guy's from Akron. Then a few seconds later the TV announcer identified the player as being from Akron's Buck-tell High School. If I had been drinking anything at the time, I would have spit it across the room because I started laughing so hard. My friend's all, Er, why is that funny? So I had to explain that it's spelled B-u-c-h-t-e-l and pronounced more like Book-tuhl. Honestly, I'm surprised that the dude said Akron right — I've heard people who are generally unfamiliar with NE OH say Ay-kron instead of Ack-rin. But I guess that must have been B.L. (Before LeBron).
It all went downhill — waaaay downhill — from there. One bright spot was the snippet of each band's halftime performance that the network deigned to broadcast. The so-called TBDBITL was cut off right when it was getting interesting, though. What was with hiding behind the blue fabric? Was the band, not content with simply creating a horrid Celine Dion earworm that lingers to this hour, going to reenact the entire movie? Maybe I can look up the whole show on YouTube later. I'm sure somebody's mom taped it and had her 13-year-old nephew upload it for her.
Anyhow, I got through three quarters of watching a Tressell-coached team play like a Crennel-coached team — Maybe that will shut up the lunkheads who think that somehow Tressell could be talked into quitting OSU and coming to coach the Browns? Doubt it. — and then I coudn't take it anymore and had to leave. I went home and found a message from Cathy on my machine: So, are you going to call your dad up and tell him to quit rooting for OSU? Heh.
After that, I tried to watch some some shows I'd taped while I was on vacation, but fell asleep on the couch instead. When I woke up, the Fox 8 morning crew was crying about the loss. I cracked up when Tracy McCool leaned over and took out Wayne Dawson's pocket square to dab at her eyes. (Mostly because of the look that flashed on Wayne's face when she leaned toward him: Uhm, where's your hand going?) Anyhow, someone at Channel 8 came up with the O-H! Oh No! headline, which also made me laugh, so I stole it for this post.
1 Down, 1 to Go
Football Mania
Actually, I still can't believe we won. Usually, close games like that don't go our way. The game was on while I was working, and I was nervous that Dawson was going to shank it there at the end. Plus, Charlie's wrist is probably broken, but they don't want to admit it. Guess I'll have to wait and see what happens on Thursday. Probably a lot of this:

In other football news that I can't believe . . . OU and OSU both play in bowl games in January. I'm not sure this guy can believe it either: Offering praise for another Ohio college football team.
My sister's an OSU alum, but she doesn't really follow sports. I wonder if she even knows that the football team is going for the national championship (again). I guess I'll be forced to root for them on her behalf.

Meanwhile, last week I was talking to some 110 alums at the MAC Championship game watch who were already figuring out flight times and driving distances and stuff to see how they were going to get to Mobile.
I did a little Googling this morning and found this: Official Ohio University GMAC Bowl Tour Package Options. With the airfare and a quad occupancy, you can get down there for just under a grand. That's not bad. If I weren't already planning to ditch work for the last two weeks of December, I would ditch work for a long weekend in the beginning of January and make the trip. As it is, I'll probably be up here in the snow, watching it on TV.
Time Warp
Ugh. I say this a lot, but today I think it's really true: This is the slowest afternoon ever!
Of course, I have a lot of things coming up to obsess over, like this

which my grandma will razz me about
if the Browns don't win
(She's a Bengals fan from way back —
ask her about her Bengals jacket
from the 1980s!)
and not a lot to occupy my attention in the here and now, which is why I end up looking at things like this t-shirt
and finding my hand hovering dangerously near the Buy with 1 Click! button before I snap back to reality.
Come on, 4:30 . . .
