Serving Myself

They finally finished remodeling the circulation desk at the local library so patrons can check themselves out — and, more importantly for me, pick up their own "hold" items.

I was quite thrilled to walk in, return a bunch of stuff I've had out for several months before finally coming to terms with the fact that I'm not going to get around to reading any of it in this lifetime, get my things off the hold shelf, scan the barcodes, and leave.

No waiting, no small talk with the clerk about how many things I have on hold (usually I have a lot, and they tend to tease me when I'm only picking up one or two things) or the weather (barf), no human interaction of any kind — I loved it!

But I'm also a fan of ATMs, paying at the pump, and the self-checkout lane at the grocery store. So, I guess that I, for one, welcome our new computer overlords.
